Would you like to know how to avoid boredom? Here are eight quick and easy tips for the man or woman stuck inside on a rainy day with nothing to do.
1. Find a good book to read. It can be difficult to find the time in our hectic work or school week to sit down and devour a novel. Literature sharpens the mind and provides a healthy escape into fantasy land. While some folks may prefer a dense educational text, quality fiction is fun and easy and will help to relieve stress.
2. Exercise your body. Running in place for a half hour, lifting weights, or doing a few sets of push ups and crunches will release endorphins and have you feeling like a brand new person. Your mood will be instantly elevated, your mind will be clear, and your body will be healthier.
3. Call your loved ones. One of the most fruitful ways to relieve boredom is to pick up the telephone and catch up with your friends and family members. Phone up those aunts and uncles you haven't spoken to since last Christmas. Carry on a lengthy conversation with your parents. Find out how your old high school buddies are holding up. Personal interaction can be a wonderful boost to your self esteem. After all, we all need to be reminded from time to time that we're loved.
4. Clean your house. There's no better time to roll up your sleeves and get down to some deep and serious cleaning than when you're bored. Although it may seem like a bit of a chore at first, once you get into it the time will fly, and the end result will be a sparkling clean domicile.
5. Get dressed and leave the house. If your problem is that you're stuck in the house with nothing to do, the easiest and most logical solution may be to simply force yourself out into the world. Drive out to that mom and pop used bookstore you've been meaning to visit. Check the newspaper and go watch a movie in the theater. Drop by a friend's house and see what they're up to. There's plenty of things to do outside.
6. Catch up on work. For many of us, our school or office assignments can accumulate over the week. Instead of staring guiltily at that pile of work on the table, knuckle down for a few hours and finish it off. Your sigh of relief after your workload has dwindled to nothing will be priceless.
7. Create some quality art. By quality, I don't mean to suggest that you should attempt to paint the Mona Lisa. The true joy of art lies in the act of creation and the expression of self. Grab a pen and notebook and crank out a few chapters of the rough draft of that novel you've always wanted to compose. You can draw or paint pictures, cut fun shapes from colored construction paper, carefully arrange a photo album, scrapbook (the word scrapbook is a verb these days), or strum out a pretty tune on that guitar of yours that's been collecting dust in the closet.
8. Spend some time with your kids. If you have children and they are up in their bedrooms being bored themselves, now is the perfect time to bond with them. Play a board game, watch their favorite video with them, or simply sit and talk to them about life.
Boredom has more to do with us than it does with our surroundings. Use your imagination - that's what it's there for.
